Guillermo Canalejo is a tax lawyer in the Madrid
office of Uría Menéndez. He joined the firm in 1997 (after having worked
for Spanish and foreign law firms for three years). He led the tax
practice of the firm’s New York office between 1998 and 2000. Guillermo
became a senior associate in January 2002. Guillermo’s
practice focuses on corporate tax, non-resident tax and international
tax planning as well as related commercial law. He also has extensive
experience in the tax aspects of M&A planning, structured financial
taxation, securitization and aircraft and ship leasing. During the last
few years he has been involved in some of Spain’s most significant deals
advising:

A leading Dutch production company on the purchase of
a Spanish TV production company.

Leading international investment banks on hybrid
financing tax driven structures.

A Spanish real estate company on the issuance of
notes through a non-resident vehicle into the international market.

A major Spanish shipping company on the acquisition
of four vessels.

Several Spanish and foreign financial entities on
developing and implementing receivables securitization deals in Spain.

Several international funds on investments made in
Spain or through Spanish holding companies.

A NYSE company on the acquisition of one of the main
Spanish shipping companies.

Legal Teaching
Guillermo has been a lecturer on tax law at Recoletos,
Conferencias & Formación and at the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid.
He frequently participates as a speaker and commentator at seminars and
conferences pertaining to his areas of expertise.
