Juan Ignacio González Ruiz is a partner in the Madrid office of Uría
Menéndez. He joined the firm in 1988 and became a partner in 1998. He
was resident partner in the firm’s London office between 1995 and mid-July
2001. His practice is focused on banking and finance, energy law and
project finance. During his stay in London, Juan advised some of the
leading international investment banks on setting up products for, and
deals in, the Spanish market, whilst retaining a direct involvement in
all areas of energy law. In the wake of the recent liberalisation of the
Spanish energy markets, Juan has been advising on many legal “firsts” in
those markets, particularly on energy supply and trading, third party
access to electricity and gas infrastructures, as well as on the
development of new CCGT plants. Some of his most significant
transactions include advising :
- a power company on the refinancing of a 325 MW combined cycle
facility for the gasification of coal. This was the only combined
cycle plant constructed and financed in Spain during the 1990’s;
- international energy companies in setting up their wholesale
supply operations in Spain;
- international sponsors in the development of new CCGT plants;
- project companies on the development of an integrated LNG
regasification and CCGT power plant in Spain, including the financing
of the LNG terminal through a Euro 200 million financing covered by a
monoline insurance policy;
- lending syndicates on the financings of groups of mini-hydro power
stations;
- the sponsors of the first windfarm financed privately through debt
and equity in the South of Spain;
- a leading British bank in the sale of its Spanish subsidiary;
- an international development bank on all its Peseta-denominated
bonds issues;
- to the lending institutions, in performing a due diligence of one
of the main telecommunications operator in Spain in the context of a
4.5 billion Euro financing (2004);
- to the lending institutions, in the financing of 1.25 billion Euro
to a cable telecommunications operator (2005);
- private fund on the acquisition of a Spanish power transmission
network (2002);
- an electricity company on the development and financing of the
first independent project (IPP) of a combined cycle plant developed in
Spain with a total installed capacity of 755 MW, to the value of Euro
690 million; and
- a developer on the development and financing through a project
finance of Euro 665 million of a 1200 MW CCGT power station, the
largest CCGT in Spain to date.
He is regarded as a leading lawyer by the main international legal
directories, such as, Chambers & Partners, PLC and International Who's
Who of Lawyers, among others.
