Rafael García Llaneza is a partner in the Tax Department in the Madrid
office of Uría Menéndez. He joined the firm in 1990 (after working for
Price Waterhouse for two years as an accountant) and became a partner in
2001. He led the tax practice of the New York office of the firm between
1993 and 1998. Rafael focuses his practice on corporate tax,
non-resident tax and accounting law. His expertise has led him to advise
on diferents corporate restructuring transactions, as well as on the
design of tax-driven financial products and private equity. In the last
two years he has been greatly involved in the planning and negotiation
of several telecoms project finance deals and in the field of renewable
energies. Moreover, he has worked in the most important project finance
transactions in Spain, including advising:
- a telecoms company on the issuance of high yield bonds and the
closing of a joint venture deal;
- a telecoms company on the sale of its internet provider subsidiary;
- a telecoms company on the finance of new licences in different
jurisdictions;
- on construction contracts for a solid waste incineration plant in
the north of Spain;
- financial entities on developing receivables securitization deals
in Spain;
- financial entities on developing hybrid products in Spain; and
- a paper company on obtaining off balance sheet financing.
Rafael has been named a
top Tax lawyer by
Chambers Global, Global Counsel 3000, Global Counsel Handbooks, and
other major indices.

Legal Teaching
He is teacher of practicum at Universidad Pontificia
Comillas, ICADE. He cooperates as Commercial Law lecturer at the Centro de
Estudios Universitarios (“CEU”) in Madrid. He is also a regular speaker and
commentator at law seminars and conferences.
