Candidates must sit an 80-minute long English language examination that will consist of a multiple choice test and a brief essay. A sample of this can be found below.

Multiple choice test

The test contains 50 questions in ascending order of difficulty, each with four possible answers. Candidates must select the most appropriate answer for each question. Two points are awarded for each correct answer. One point is deducted for each incorrect answer. Zero points are awarded for questions left blank. This means that you should only answer the questions if you are confident that you know the answer.  

Candidates will be given 50 minutes to complete the multiple choice test, which will have a weighting of 50% towards the overall mark.

Essay

Candidates will be asked to write an essay in English of at least 250 words in length. You will have two possible topics to choose from and will be expected to express your opinion on your chosen topic following a balanced and logical structure. This will give candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to use complex structures and expressions. Grammatical accuracy will also be taken into consideration. Marks will also be awarded for correct spelling and appropriate vocabulary.

Candidates will be given 30 minutes to complete the essay, which will have a weighting of 50% towards the overall mark.

There are 50 multiple choice questions. The questions are set out in ascending order of difficulty; the first questions are the easiest and the last questions are the hardest.

Choose the most appropriate answer for each question. Read the questions carefully and only answer those you are sure about. If in doubt it is best to leave the harder questions blank.

All answers must be marked with a pencil in the answer sheet provided.

Marking system:

2 points for a correct answer
-1 point for an incorrect answer
0 points for no answer

Section 2: Essay 

Time allotted: 30 minutes

 

Write a brief essay (250 words) on one of the two topics provided. The purpose of the essay is to assess your ability to express yourself in English.

A. People learn foreign languages for many different reasons (for example, employability, travel, family or the desire to live abroad). What do you think are the most important reasons for learning a foreign language? Provide specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

B. As modern society develops, traditional ways of life are improved on and many traditions are discontinued. Is it important to keep our traditional ways of life? Provide specific reasons to support your answer.
