Rodrigo Uría González passed away today in Madrid

It is with deep regret that we announce the death, today in Madrid, of Rodrigo Uría González, the father of our Managing Partner, Professor and Founding Partner of the law firm Uría & Menéndez.

September 17, 2001

Born in Oviedo on 26th November 1906, Rodrigo Uría, who has had a profound impact and influence on Commercial Law studies in Spain, is considered to be, along with Joaquín Garrigues, one of the most distinguished experts on Commercial Law of all times.

He obtained a Degree in Law with Honours from the University of Oviedo in 1929. He was appointed Chaired Professor of Commercial Law at the University of Salamanca in 1943 and at the University of Madrid in 1952 and was granted the title of Doctor 'Honoris Causa' by several universities. Rodrigo Uría is moreover the author of one of the most influential works in Spanish Commercial Law which has decidedly contributed to the formation of various generations of lawyers.

The late Rodrigo Uría has been the Director of the Commercial Law Journal since its foundation in 1946, a member of the Board of the Bank of Spain, Permanent member of the General Codification Committee and a member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation. Amongst other distinctions, he was an Honorary Member of the Asturian Academy of Jurisprudence and was awarded the Gran Cruz de Alfonso X El Sabio, Gran Cruz de San Raimundo de Peñafort as well as the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences in 1990.

The late Rodrigo Uría was teaching at the same time as he was practising law. He served the legal world by sharing his extensive knowledge of the law as well as his profound sense of humanism leaving behind him a clear model of personal and professional conduct for us all to follow.

We have just lost a great Master, an example of magnanimity, generosity, decency and modesty. He will be greatly missed and remembered by us all.
