URÍA & MENÉNDEZ, First Foreign Firm to Obtain The Lisbon Bar Admission
We have the pleasure to announce that we are the first foreign law firm to have obtained authorization to open an office and render legal services in Portugal. This country recently implemented the European Union’s Directive 98/5/CE by way of an Act of July 2001 regulating the rendering of legal services by foreign law firms in Portugal and in Portuguese Law.
November 6, 2001The high level of interaction between the Portuguese and the Spanish economies combined with our Firm’s increasing workload in and focus on Portugal since 1998 has led our Firm to open an office advising on on Portuguese, Spanish and European Union Law. In this way, Uría and Menéndez is now in the best position to serve its clients and help achieve their business objectives in Portugal.
Our office in Lisbon already comprises 14 lawyers who, between them advise, principally, in the areas of Commercial, Financial, Securities, Real Estate, Tax, Litigation and Labour Law. This office is headed by Mr. Duarte Garín, a leading Portuguese lawyer in Real Estate Law, and by Mrs. Coloma Armero, Spanish partner and a leading practitioner in Financial Law.
