The European Union Regulation on critical raw materials

Regulation (EU) 2024/1252 of 11 April 2024, establishing a framework for ensuring a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials was published on 3 May 2024.

The Regulation includes several measures aimed at ensuring a secure, resilient and sustainable access to the raw materials the Regulation classifies as “critical” (or “strategic”) because their supply chain is vulnerable, their demand in the European Union is growing, they are concentrated in a small number of countries and they have no adequate and sufficient alternatives.

We have prepared a brief newsletter on the key aspects of the Regulation. It analyses, among other things, the creation of the category of “strategic projects” for strategic raw materials, the recognition of which by the European Commission will enable project promoters to benefit from shorter authorisation procedures and financial backing.
