Daniel Proença de Carvalho became chairman of Uría Menéndez - Proença de Carvalho in March 2010 following the merger of the law firms Proença de Carvalho & Associados and Uría Menéndez.
Apart from practising as a lawyer, Daniel was the Minister of Social Communication in Mota Pinto’s 4th Constitutional Government (1978-79), chairman of Rádio Televisão Portuguesa (1980-1983), and chairman of the board of directors of the Arpad Szènes-Vieira da Silva Foundation (1993-2007).
Daniel is currently chairman of the board of directors of Cimpor - Cimentos de Portugal, SGPS, S.A. and of Global Notícias - Media Group, S.A., member of the general council of AEM - Associação de Empresas Emitentes de Valores Cotados em Mercado (representing Cimpor - Cimentos de Portugal, SGPS, S.A.) and chairman of the general meeting of many companies such as Galp Energia, SGPS, S.A., Renova, S.A. Interoceânico-Capital, SGPS, S.A..
He also holds positions in non-profit organisations, such as chairman of the board of trustees of the Champalimaud Foundation.
Daniel has been chairman of the general meeting of the Portuguese Institute of Corporate Governance since June 2010.
As a lawyer, Daniel has worked in all areas of legal practice, including litigious and non-litigious matters. He has been involved in many types of arbitration proceedings, both as lawyer and arbitrator. Besides his vast litigation experience, Daniel is highly experienced in economic, commercial and M&A matters, advising both national and foreign companies.
Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 have named Daniel a leading litigation lawyer in Portugal for several years.
In 2009, Diário Económico presented Daniel a lifetime achievement award, referring to him as “the lawyer for complex cases” and “the bulletproof lawyer... respected both within and outside of the sector.”
In 2016 he received the Medal of Honour from the Portuguese Bar Association.
